Using Honey in Natural Skin and Hair Products

Lips

Bee honey has natural healing enzymes that are perfect for sensitive areas like the face, eyes and lips. Our lips do not contain any sebaceous (oil producing) glands so they rely solely on external moisture sources. Just like the skin surrounding the eyes, this area can easily become dry and start to show signs of aging. Honey is both antibacterial and extremely moisturizing which means it can effectively treat and heal parched cracked lips. A good quality lip serum will combine honey with other natural ingredients such as organic olive oil to enhance the moisturizing abilities of the lip serum.

Not only can honey act as a moisturizer but it also can help to treat oily or acne prone skin. Hyperactive sebaceous glands produce excessive amounts of sebum, causing oily skin. When too much oil builds up within a pore, bacteria grow and the result is a pimple. Honey has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that will inhibit the growth of bacteria and will help to prevent acne breakouts from becoming "enflamed". When honey is used in an oil reducing serum, it can help to aid in the skins' own cell renewal process, improve the skin's elasticity and encourage the formation of stronger collagen.

Hair

The nutritional needs of skin and hair are very closely related and honey is a super moisturizer for dry hair or for color or chemically treated hair. If you color your hair, you know that it is most vibrant on the days between the actual coloring process and your first post color shampoo. Since well conditioned hair will hold the color longer, a good deep conditioning treatment using a honey based conditioner will provide longer lasting hair color.
