Dry skin needs to be moisturized every day. To get the most out of your moisturizer, you should apply it as soon as you step out of the shower. Gently blot excess water off with your towel and then massage a generous layer of moisturizer into your skin, while it is still damp.
Every one, even those without dry skin, should avoid harsh chemical cleansers. They remove all of the skin's natural oils. Look for sulfate (or "SLS") free shower gels and cleansers. Instead, use an organic castile soap based cleanser. If you prefer bar soap, choose one that is made of natural, preferably organic ingredients with coconut derived foaming agents. Coconut is one of nature's finest ingredients and is the base for many natural bar soaps and gel cleansers. Natural, plant derived, petroleum free moisturizers are your best defense against dry skin. Petroleum based "moisturizers" give the illusion of moisturizing by forming a greasy shield on the skins surface. Simply put, petroleum is a byproduct of oil refining and should be not be used on the skin.
An effective moisturizer should provide both immediate and long term hydration to the skin. Moisturizers with high water (aqua) content evaporate before they have a chance to sink into the skin. FDA regulations require manufacturers to list their ingredients in a descending order. This means that the first ingredient makes up the majority of the product. Many of the most expensive creams list "aqua" as their first ingredient. It does not really matter how many other ingredients are in a cream if it is going to evaporate soon after you apply it. This is something for you to consider when choosing a moisturizer that will provide lasting, nourishing hydration to the skin.
An ideal moisturizing treatment should contain a high level of rich and preferably organic nut oils and butters. Ingredients to look for include shea, almond, soy, cocoa, wheat germ and sunflower. These are just a few oils and butters that will hydrate, nourish and moisturize the skin. Vitamin E, lecithin, glycerin and aloe vera are also wonderful for nourishing and hydrating dry skin.
Please keep in mind that severely dry skin should be properly assessed by a dermatologist to rule out underlying causes such as eczema, psoriasis or possible food allergies. Other causes might also include contact dermatitis (rashes) triggered by allergic reactions to laundry detergent, perfume, etc. |
