Our skin is continuously renewing itself. Skin cells reach the end of their cycle and new ones attempt to emerge. This process of cell turnover gradually slows down as we age, so it becomes necessary to gently encourage cell regeneration. Whether you wear makeup or not, cleansing your skin twice a day is an absolute MUST. If you don't cleanse your face before going to bed, you're interfering with the natural renewal of the skin's surface. Going to sleep without cleansing your skin can also result in acne: whiteheads, blackheads, red bumps or a combination of all three.

Generally speaking it takes approximately 3 weeks for a pimple to reach the skins surface. A pimple begins at the bottom of a pore where sebum, the oil that keeps our skin moist and flexible, is produced. When a pore gets blocked with dead skin cells, makeup and environmental pollutants the renewal process cannot take place and the opening of the pore is now clogged with a mixture of debris and bacteria. Natural oil production continues and with no means of escape, the pore begins to swell. White blood cells rush to the scene of the crime to attack the bacteria and the result is a pimple. Whiteheads stay beneath the surface of the skin. When a whitehead opens up at the skins surface, the sebum turns black, as a result of oxidization and now you have a good old fashioned blackhead. This is a very abbreviated and generic description of the formation of acne.
