Help For Dry Hair and Frizz - Without Silicone!

hands

Hair looks and feels dehydrated when it lacks internal weight. The cortex (center) of dry hair is “empty”, for lack of a better word. Dehydrated hair is desperate for moisture and it will suck it in from where ever it can find it.

Weekly use of the appropriate deep conditioner will strengthen weak tresses. The protein in each deep conditioner will give your hair the help it needs to repair itself.

In humid conditions, moisture from the air is drawn into the hairs empty cortex. This forces the cuticles of the hair to push outward, giving hair a fuzzy or frizzy appearance. If your hair is damaged, many or most of the strands have gaps from broken or missing cuticles. This means there are A LOT of places for the moisture from humid air to seep into and the result is frizz. When your hair is strong, nourished and properly moisturized, the empty gaps on individual strands are filled in, leaving no place for the frizz inducing moisture in the air to go. You need to hydrate your hair every day to give it internal weight, and protect it from environmental causes of dehydration (indoor heating, air conditioning, UV rays, etc.).

Deep Conditioner

Weekly use of the appropriate Deep Conditioner will strengthen weak tresses. The protein in each deep conditioner will give your hair the help it needs to repair itself. Once your hair has rebuilt its strength, keep it healthy by deep conditioning every two weeks. Remember: The only way a deep conditioner can work properly is with the use of gentle, sustained and controlled heat. My Phat Head Hair Therapy Cordless Heat Cap is IDEAL for deep conditioning treatments. The low heat needed for a proper deep conditioning treatment is not at all damaging to the hair. It should not be confused with the high temperatures that are used to blow dry, flat iron or hot curl the hair for styling.

Daily Moisturizer

If your hair tends to be dry, you need to use a daily moisturizer to keep it hydrated. In the winter, I prefer to moisturize my hair before I go to bed: I spray a light coating of Daily Jojoba Moisturizing Mist or Daily Botanical Boost throughout my hair, lifting small sections with one hand as I spray with the other. Once I have misted my entire head, I pass my hands over my head a few times (as if I were making a ponytail). Finally, I gather all the ends up in a little afro puff at the top of my head and then secure it with a satin covered scrunchee. I don’t use a cotton scrunchee because the material pulls moisture out of the hair and into the absorbent cotton. I sleep on a satin pillow case for the same reason: Hair and skin glide across satin.

Cleansing and Styling

I cleanse & deep condition my hair once a week, with Jojoba Cleansing Milk. I spray on a generous amount of No Knots Leave-In Moisture Mist and then apply Silk Sheets Styling Lotion.

On the days that I don’t cleanse/deep condition, I use the steam of the shower to my advantage: After my shower, my hair is slightly damp from the steam, so I massage a little Organic Conditioning & Styling Oil, Coconut Pudding or Shea & Honey Pomade into my hair and I’m all set. I use pudding for the first day or two after cleansing. On days 3 and four, I use styling oil and for the remaining days, I use pomade.

I work out 6 mornings a week and I sweat A LOT. My scalp is the first place that starts to perspire. Since my scalp and hair aren’t coated with waxy, petroleums or heavy oils, the perspiration merely evaporates, so my head doesn’t smell funky. Believe me: I am VERY sensitive to odors… especially if I’m the source! What can I say? Sometimes, funk happens.

I wear my hair in it’s natural state. Curly. VERY curly. Well, that’s not entirely accurate: If my hair was 100% natural, it would be about 30% gray. I use a demi permanent hair color every 6 to 8 weeks to cover my grays. I use Super Moisturizing Sulphate Free Shampoo and Clarifying Conditioner right before I color to make sure that the color “grabs”.

If your hair is curly and you straighten it with heat or a chemical relaxer, your regime is going to look very different than mine. I will address the challenges of heat styling on another day… In the meantime, please take a look at the entire Phat Head Collection and see which products are right for you! I welcome your comments, questions and feedback, so let me hear from YOU!
